I understand that CNN thinks that an interesting characteristic of this pervatron is that he has blogged about his predilection for being a pervatron, but is that the defining characteristic of this individual for a headline???

On their own website they have an alternate headline for the video story that reads more appropriately:

In this case you could argue that the “blog” aspect relates to the story, but I think we know what is going on here. If you express yourself on the internet, you are automatically a stereotype for the sausage factory.

“CNN viewer John Doe has been convicted of animal molestation. The longtime fan of Nancy Grace and Larry King was discovered in a compromising position with a Shetland pony during the Situation Room time slot. CNN officials declined to comment.”

“CNN viewer accused of bogarding the cake batter beaters. What an asshole. ”

Chuck, that is sausage festival that you were thinking about.

“CNN employees known to masturbate, possibly access internet porn, check their personal e-mails during work. At least one CNN employee has dated a convicted drug addict.”

Yeah, I know. But I’m really concerned that Mr. Bean is a misogynistic representation of white western values towards the clitoris. And nothing but silence from talk radio. What am I to make of that?

Pinko, we’re not the ones who scared all the girls away.

I read that bloggers refuse to put the toilet seat down.

Bloggers label kitchenware with dark colors, and don’t use a chip clip, thus: stale Doritos. Assholes!

In the meantime, the emus have taken over your blog sidebar.

I read that as “Law blogger arrested near…” and thought Anne Althouse had finally been arrested for being criminally stupid.

I’m super sad right now. I think I’ll blog about it…

I think a good portion of the beginning of the story is being left out.

This guy’s blog had come to the attention of some people in his area, who contacted the news media. His blog existed to give tips to pedophiles on where to go to find and photograph maximum numbers of little girls.

Last week, he agreed to be interviewed on Dan Abram’s show on MSNBC. The blogger said that blogging about where to find little girls did not make him a pedophile; he said he was a photographer and simply looking for good art. Abrams went far in trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, and the guy said he would stop giving the tips, since he didn’t want anyone to “get the wrong idea.”

It was AFTER that, after an interview in which he assured Abrams and the public that his blog was perfectly innocent, that he got in trouble for violating a restraining order that had barred him from being near this daycare center.

Given this context, it seems reasonable enough to mention that this guy – someone who had blogged creepy stuff, been called on it, then got his five minutes of fame by agreeing to appear on national television while assuring everyone his blog was not meant as a “where to pick up tiny tots” guide – was a BLOGGER who got caught doing exactly what he’d been swearing his blog WASN’T about.

I know ceejay, those are good points, but if you have to pick one word for that story, “pedophile” or “blogger”, I’d go with the first, or most accurately both. I know his deal was to have a massively weird blog. I make no excused for such a nutjob. The framing of the headline, not the actual story fits the “bloggers are crazy and different from other humans” thing the media has got going on.

CNN has a new article about the situation. The title is more aply named Experts: Blogger pedophile tiptoes around law.

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/08/16/blogging.pedophile.ap/index.html

I have to say that the article is reasonably well-balanced. Here’s what it has to say about the blogging oomponent:

McClellan, who mostly has lived out of his car since arriving in California a few months ago, maintained a Web site for years where he posted pictures of children he had photographed in public places. It has since been taken down by the server.

He said earlier this month that running the site, where he also discussed how he likes to stake out parks, public libraries and other areas where little girls congregate, was therapeutic because it allowed him to share his thoughts.

“I thought it was the best therapeutic thing for my own head to kind of put this out there, what I’m thinking,” he said before his arrest. “I’m determined not to do anything illegal. I haven’t done anything illegal.”
