I think Sarah Palin is being prepared to be scapegoated for everything relating to the McCain debacle. I think she bears some responsibility for having the unmitigated hubris to consider that she might be capable of running the country. That being said, she was convinced of such by a campaign apparatus that bears the true responsibility. She can’t get her positions straight because they are built on an incoherent quicksand. She will be the one to take the fall. The insiders are now starting to whisper about her incompetence. Guess who’s upstairs in this incompetence chain of command, assholes? You are. I fear the inevitable discussions of Palin’s incompetence will eventually take a sexist detour as they always do. It’s bogus. In fact it is STAGMC.
You want to know why flamewars on blogs are so annoying? They resemble the McCain campaign in having the message discipline and rhetorical focus of a mutant fruitfly. The Obama campaign has been criticized several times over for not exhibiting rabid, gotcha, rhetorically juvenile blog-type responses. I have found it to be refreshing. This is not a free pass for Capt. O, just an observation.

I’ve been thinking that almost since the beginning. I don’t agree with 99% that she stands for and agree that she should have had the sense to realize she was not up for leading the land, but the whole idea of what they seem to be doing to her really pisses me off.
Do you think they’ll let her continue until the debate? Watching that debate, although it sounds really appealing in a sick kind of way, would be adding insult to injury. The few interviews they’ve let out have been painful enough.

Blog flamewars often have perfectly good message discipline — generally restricted to “I’m right, and my opponent is a poopy pants!”, but remarkably consistent. In the future, Usenet may be most regretted for having given rhetorical strategies to Republican operatives.
As for Yertle Palin, anyone who would let Pastor Malleus Maleficarum (and/or the GOP hierarchy) convince her that her destiny is to be Mistress of the Universe deserves, on a personal level, more or less whatever she gets. Though the vicious tailspin in evidence in the Couric interview is a bit pity inducing.
It is also the case that, on some level, the GOP dons aren’t just using her. She really does seem to be their sort of unprincipled authoritarian goon, and in that sense, has “earned” her way to the ranks of made wingnuts.
However, the level of authoritarian cluelessness and cynical condescension (toward her and toward the public) on evidence in the game they’re playing with her, while weirdly routine, is also truly sick.
You know what sucks about being a liberal? It’s having to care about all sorts of shit that doesn’t really get me riled up, except on the level of abstract principles. Like every other time I load Atrios or Sadly No, there’s an ad for an anti-meat group over on the sidebar, with a picture of bloody meat that the advertisers apparently think will repulse liberals. But all it makes me think is, mmm, bloody meat.
I’ve basically scratched cruelty to animals off my list of Things I Need To Care About — it is a long enough list, what with global warming, racism, economic inequality, idiocratarianism, etc. Also not on my list of worries: mildly sexist attacks on Sarah Palin, and egregiously ageist attacks on John McCain. Now get the hell off my lawn!
