Sigh

I was going to post something trivial and non-sensical, but I reflect on our great shame as fafblog opens both barrels.

I’ve noted that many individuals of pundit aroma act like scoring irrelevant rhetorical points in panel discussions somehow has bearing on physical realities. *ssholes.

  • Not mentioned: George W. Bush never brought them to trial.

    Disingenuous, but justified.

  • You know you are in trouble when you are outpaced by fafblog.

  • I just read the news, what was shaping up to be a delightful week of gloating I now imagine will be filled with dark ruminations. I feel down when the inadequacies of our outrage over world events are made plain by a lobster and for many of us, NFL-fueled complacency, no?

  • The NFL has not fueled complacency. Brady was robbed by the ref on 4th and 2…

  • Well, the NFL does practice that horrible communist revenue sharing. And look how well that’s worked out for them.

  • Why did Tom Brady not use his telekinetic powers to move his receiver clearly beyond the first-down marker?

Quite a post by the lobster.

  • NFl choady-choadness:

On Sunday I spent some time breaking rocks, in the office; of course, there is no such thing as over air reception for plain old tvs anymore, so I tuned into the local sports station to listen to the Packers play the cowboys. Just as well, cuz the on-air team is more entertaining than the high priced talent on the teevees.

Of course, the NFL does not allow internet streaming of radio broadcasts. Why? The commercials are still frickin there.

To increase the cluelessness factor, the radio station allowed me to listen for most of the first half, before a canned “copyright restrictions eat me blah blah blah” announcement took over.

    NFL. Hmpf.

  • we really do need an intervention from the OmbudsGathering.

  • I don’t know if fish could handle the Howler PLUS the Patriots. Poor fish.

  • While the statistical analysis may be a push, the call by the Belichick 3000 was dead wrong from a football perspective. I will refrain from expounding out of respect for Jennifer’s eyeballs possibly rolling back in her head from excessive NFL discourse. But from a psychological standpoint, it is a terrible idea to tell your defense you have no confidence in them halfway through the season, against a team they may see again in the playoffs.

Also, I am one of Stupack’s constituents, and Belichick looks like a genius compared to that amendment. I can’t understand why the majority party is so freaking afraid of the guys they beat the snot out of a year ago.

  • Brando- that is the false choice. The only certain result is get two yards and win. This doesn’t say anything about the defense. Bel3000 went for the only case where the result would be guaranteed.

  • I’m with PP. Belichick went for 70% (NE 4th down conversion rate) chance of a guaranteed win in Indianapolis. I take those numbers too. If the ref wasn’t so obviously in the tank and they give Faulk the 1st down, the press corps would be lauding BB for his brilliant strategy.

  • It says everything about how Belichick views his defense. His call told his defense that he felt they couldn’t stop the Colts for 60-70 yards, with one timeout and likely no 2-minute warning (I think the punt would have taken long enough to hit the warning).

Statistically, there was a slight advantage for going for it vs. kicking (according to the advanced NFL stats guys, 79% chance of winning vs. 70% by going for it, assuming Indy needed about 70 yards to score). However, their analysis didn’t factor in timeouts, which would reduce the Colts chances somewhat. So, again, it’s about a push.

This means that, from a statistical standpoint, the Pats had roughly the same chance of winning in either case. However, if they kicked and lost, while that would generate some negative feedback, it wouldn’t be remarkable. Going for it and failing, however, had the possibility of hurting defensive morale and generating a lot of negative baggage for the team. He created a situation where this loss would hang over the team for the rest of the season.

If their coach were Marty Schotenheimer, I would agree with you 100%. They would all be slitting their wrists and swallowing the whole bottle of Advil. The cult of personality is too strong for the Pats though. Those guys trust BB completely.

  • Marty Schotenheimer would have punted on 3rd and 2, just to be safe.

Just ignore me. I am a bitter, bitter NFL fan this year.

  • I like how we co-opted Pinko’s post on how he didn’t feel like posting about something trivial so we could talk about football.

    I vote 32 points for #3.

I’m a Redskins fan, Mister Luxury.

  • none of you can compare to the ignominy of realizing, as a small impressionable zombie, that your favorite team’s franchise quarterback is named LYNN DICKEY.

    Packers fans know from suffering.
