We emerge only briefly from our hibernation to bring you important news: a new species of jumping spider has been discovered, and a contest is being held to name it. Beware of photos of said specimen at the link. You know who you are.
Pinko suggests ploverulus amatiens, but we are partial to the more subtle lapsias gooba, in spite of the patriarchal naming conventions used in descriptive names.
(Astute and worldly readers will note that this same edifice detailed by decidedly more local blogger Substance McGravitas. Thus far, a plaque to commemorate the visit has not been approved.)
Please contribute your suggestions below, or at the link. Bonus points for Phil Collins references and more general depravity.
Any other business?
Names honouring people: Traditionally, to name a species in honour of a person, simple suffixes are added to the person’s name. Thus, to honor someone named “Sen”, the species names would be “seni” if the person was male, “senae” if the person was female. If it’s named after two people named “Sen”, the species name would be “senorum”.
I see they are frowning on the “gooba” option.
And I don’t even want to think about Rick S.

This pic is awesome.
He/she/it/spider is like a cross between the Lone Ranger and (Full) Frito Bandito.

Let’s just name it Jennifer.
Yeah, we should name it after Santa Claus. Santorum? What’s the problem?
I guess I need to remember the genitive of Goob- I’d say Goobae. You say Hello!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL NOT CLICK, I WILL NOT CLICK!!!
Just reading jumping spider almost made me lose my Cheerios.
I say we name it “WORST NIGHTMARE”!
That really is purty. I wonder what use it could be put to.
It could be elected to the Senate in Pennsylvania.
Let’s fund education!
{spider jumps, bites me, looks cute with it’s 8 seemingly innocent eyes}
Or maybe not!

Willy’s link is the best. It has a certain Snaggian goodness.
I am composing “Reggae is Wonderful” in my mind right now.
All I can think of now is pushing slightly too hard while grooming my spider.
No, that is not what the kids are calling it these days.
YOU’RE PUSHING TOO HARD, YOU’RE PUSHING TOO HARD ON ME- A CUTE SPIDER
catchy tune
you are all pure evil
like at the end of Time Bandits?
